Thermography of Steam Distribution System

about img

Objectives of Thermography in Steam Systems

  • Identify heat losses through uninsulated or poorly insulated piping.
  • Detect steam leaks from valves, flanges, or fittings.
  • Pinpoint faulty steam traps (e.g., passing steam or blocked traps).
  • Locate blockages or restrictions in steam piping.
  • Assess insulation integrity across steam lines.
  • Check performance of heat exchangers, pressure reducing valves (PRVs), and other components.

Key Components to Survey

Steam Traps

  • Compare temperatures on inlet and outlet sides.
  • Identify traps passing live steam or showing cold, non-condensing temperatures.

Valves & Flanges

  • Detect leakage or bypassing in valves.
  • Identify hot spots or irregular heat signatures indicating failure.

Insulation Systems

  • Scan for exposed hot surfaces suggesting missing or damaged insulation.

Condensate Return Lines

  • Ensure proper condensate flow and absence of blockages or backlogs.

Heat Exchangers & PRVs

  • Look for uneven heating, temperature anomalies, or flow issues.
